Well, it was bound to happen, and nobody doubted Apple would be the one to break the tape. But Cupertino has approved its 500,000th app in the App Store.

The wildly popular marketplace to iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touches, the App Store and it's half-millon apps rally against all the competitors' app outlets combined. Of the approved apps, 37% are free, the average price is $3.64, and it's backed by nearly 86,000 developers.

In honor of the milestone, 148Apps, Chillingo and Chomp created a Facebook page to host a detailed infographic on Apple's journey to 500K. From Pandora, to Angry Birds, to Kindle, to Netflix, the graphic offers up a fascinating timeline from the App Store's inception to present day.
