The US Army held a live-fire demonstration of its "new M855A1 5.56mm bullet" this morning, according to the Army's Public Affairs Office.

Apparently, the "enhanced performance round" contains an "environmentally-friendly projectile that eliminates up to 2,000 tons of lead from the manufacturing process each year in direct support of Army commitment to environmental stewardship."

Our men and women in uniform don't have to sacrifice performance while doing their part to ensure the pristine wilds of downtown Baghdad stay pollution-free, either. Lt. Col. Jeffrey K. Woods, the program's product manager, calls the M855A1 "the best general purpose 5.56mm round ever produced."

The greening of the battlefield has been underway for quite some time now, with everything from hybrid-drive tanks:

To A-10 Warthogs that run on biofuel:

Lest one think the military's gone all Ed Begley Jr. on us, this whole green business is more about safety than making sure Kabul residents aren't exposed to any unnecessary carcinogens.

As Tad Davis, the Army's deputy assistant secretary for environment, safety and occupational health, explained back in '08:

“If we can reduce consumption on our forward operating bases by using renewable energy, let’s say wind or solar instead of a diesel generator outside the tent … then we can reduce the number of these supply convoys that need to come forward that are getting hit by these IEDs."
