BREAKING: Judges Name Best Sandwich in Eastern Maine

You heard it here first, folks: judges Melanie Brooks, Emily Burnham, and Todd Simcox named Russ Flewelling's Summer Pork Sandwich, a "delightful mix of tangy pickles, sweet apples and savory roast pork on homemade foccacia" the winning entry at the first-ever Best Sandwich in Eastern Maine Competition on Tuesday.

“My main objective was that I wanted to do pork,” Flewelling told reporters. “Not a lot of sandwiches have pork, besides a Cuban or a pulled pork sandwich. So instead of doing a hot sandwich, I did a cold summer sandwich.”

Flewelling went head-to-head with 15 other competitors, and each was judged on flavor, presentation, and creativity. But no one -- not even Gott’s Store in Southwest Harbor or Giacomo’s in Bangor -- had the moxie to defeat the reigning champ.

Amazingly, Flewelling, an instructor at the United Technologies Center, almost didn't get to compete.

"We have a restaurant at the school, so we count," he told WABI, the local CBS affiliate, whose weatherman happens to be sandwich judge Todd Simcox.

Russ took home a $500 gift certificate and a plaque. But the prize that means the most to the Earl of sandwich?

"Bragging rights," Flewelling said.
