Android's Best App Hits Milestone

Print comment Post Comments
When comparing the strengths of Android to the iPhone, BlackBerry, and Windows Phone 7 devices, its best feature is invariably mentioned -- Google Maps. In conjunction with turn-by-turn navigation and Voice Controls, this free app soars ahead of the competition and their lesser attempts at GPS-based apps. Currently, no one else delivers a better combination of directions, navigation, real-time traffic, and find-the-nearest-sushi-joint.

But along with the constant addition of new features like 3D Street View and Foursquare-like check-ins, Google Maps celebrated an Android Market milestone by becoming the first Android app to reach 50 million installations.

Of course, a lion's share of those installations can be attributed to its default inclusion in the Android OS, but the app itself is so indispensable that the majority of users couldn't picture using Android without it.
