10 Things President Obama Didn't Say In Last Night's State of the Union Address

Print comment Post Comments
By now everyone knows what the President said during last night's State of the Union address, but what about what wasn't said?

Of course, rationale people understand President Obama can't cover everything during a single speech, even during a single, comprehensive State of the Union speech, but that won't stop complainey people from complaining. No-ooo!

Someone on Twitter today pointed out that Peter Druecker or somebody once said, "The secret of communication is hearing what's not being said," or something to that effect, which is one of those classic non-sequitur lines that at first glance appears to contain some kind of hidden universal truth, but in reality is pure gibberish! What does that even mean? It doesn't mean anything, of course. It's pseudo-sophistry. But it sure sounds good!

Anyway, here is a list of things the President did NOT say last night. Think of these as the elephants in our national room, if you like:

1. Foreclosure

2. House (He did, however, mention Housing. Context: "There are at least five different agencies that deal with housing policy.")

3. Wall Street (The word street was used, but not in relation to the one in New York City where the fat cats are; c.f. 4, 7.)

4. Bailout

5. General Motors (Even though we own it, wasn't mentioned.)

6. General Electric (How about that 3.6% effective tax rate, eh? You're really doing your part, GE.)

7. Fat cats

8. Bankers (Though he did use the word "banks" once. Context: "That’s why we’ve ended the unwarranted taxpayer subsidies that went to banks, and used the savings to make college affordable for millions of students.")

9. Fish (Other than salmon. Context: "The Interior Department is in charge of salmon while they’re in fresh water, but the Commerce Department handles them when they’re in saltwater. (Laughter.) I hear it gets even more complicated once they’re smoked. (Laughter and applause.))

10. Packers or Steelers (He did use the word "Steel" once, however. Is it a sign?! "Steel mills that once needed 1,000 workers can now do the same work with 100.)

11. Monster Lizard (Sorry, my SEO manager made me put this in because it's been trending on Google all morning. But, in my defense, the President did NOT use the phrase "Monster Lizard" last night.)
POSITION:  No positions in stocks mentioned.
