This week, Nielsen released its third-quarter metrics for smartphone ownership, and while the post-collegiate set -- ages 25 to 34 -- are the largest group to own smartphones, those in the Baby Boomer demo are snatching up iPhones and Droids at the quickest pace.
As of September 2011, 30% of folks aged 55 to 64 are amongst the smartphone-toting crowd. Although it's the second-smallest group surveyed, that's a five percent hike since the previous quarter.
Not unexpectedly, smartphone owners are the majority in their respective demographics from ages 18 through 44 -- the chiefest being 62% of people aged 25 to 34, which also grew 21% since the same time last year.
Mostly everyone saw double-digit gains in smartphone ownership over the course of the year. However, the retiree set -- those over 65 -- had a gain of only 6% to earn the title of having lowest smartphone penetration with 18%.
And let that be the last we hear of "penetration" in relation to folks over 65.
