Wall Street ratings agencies set the tone for today's stock market.
Stocks faltered in the final hour, falling after last week’s strong showing, as Moody’s cut Greece’s debt rating four notches to “junk” status. With education outfit Apollo Group (APOL) sliding 6.8% to lead S&P 500 laggards, it seems even companies named after the Greek god of healing are hurting. One can only assume Athens will answer back by working like a Trojan horse -- Saturday’s soccer contest between the country with four general strikes this year alone and South Korea, whose average 2,315 annual hours on the job exceeds any other county on earth, shows labor earns its own rewards even at play.
Meanwhile BP Plc (BP) shares plunged another 9.71% and are at a 13-year low in London ahead of tomorrow’s scheduled meeting between CEO Tony Hayward and a fresh-from-the-Gulf President Obama as the impact of the oil spill continues to ripple. (If yesterday’s incident involving a burst sewage pipe at its World Cup headquarters is any indication, England is on a leak streak.) Oil executives testify before Capitol Hill this morning and Best Buy (BBY) highlights today’s earnings announcements. Also read Best Buy Outlook Ahead of First Quarter Earnings.
