"Transformers" Dominates Holiday Weekend
Box office results for the weekend of July 1-4, 2011.
Overall, the Top 10 generated an estimated $185.8 million over the Friday to Sunday span, up a small 3.7% from last year when The Twilight Saga: Eclipse led the Top 10 to an overall total of $178.9 million. Two new comedies enter the marketplace this weekend; Sony’s (SNE) Zookeeper starring Kevin James and Horrible Bosses from New Line Cinema. Although both of these films should perform well, they will not have enough strength to lead the Top 10 to a win over last year when Despicable Me and Predators opened.
Transformers: Dark of the Moon collected an estimated $97.5 million over the Friday to Sunday portion of the holiday weekend and $116.4 million over the four days. Here’s a side by side comparison between the first six days of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and Dark of the Moon.

Dark of the Moon should be in for a massive drop next weekend, but due to stronger word of mouth for this installment, the fall may not be quite as big as the 61% tumble Revenge of the Fallen experienced during its sophomore weekend.
Larry Crowne from Universal collected an estimated $13.1 million over its first three days with a four day total of $15.7 million. This was a weak opening for the film considering the combined star power of Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts, but the target audience of adults over the age of 35 doesn’t usually tend to rush out to see films on their opening weekends. That same demographic was also likely distracted by the Fourth of July holiday. This could mean that Larry Crowne will have a strong hold next weekend and become a bit of a sleeper hit.
20th Century Fox’s Monte Carlo had a mild debut with only $7.4 million over three days and a four day total of $8.8 million. Star Selena Gomez had a similar result for last year’s Ramona and Beezus proving that she has a strong fan base of young girls who will follow her into different roles. That being said, with most of the fan base satisfied this weekend, Monte Carlo will likely disappear from theaters rather quickly.
