Wall Street ratings agencies set the tone for today's stock market.
The S&P 500 Index slipped for a second day and Dow Industrials again failed to breach 11,000 as a decline in commodity and consumer companies -- allied to an increased likelihood of currency confrontations -- offset an improvement in initial unemployment filings. On a day many retailers reported gang buster same store sales, comps at Target (TGT) posted a paltry 1.3% increase and the biggest attendance in Target Field’s short history were similarly disappointed as the Yankees took a 2-0 ALCS series lead against Minnesota’s Twins. PepsiCo (PEP), which held its most recent analyst day at the House that Ruth rebuilt, got no halo effect from the Bronx Bombers and instead tumbled 2.95% on disappointing guidance. A.T. Cross (ATX), America’s most iconic maker of writing instruments, fell 4.46% on a day President Obama readied his veto pen to block a bill which would make it easier for financial institutions to process foreclosures without human signatures. Go figure.
A new study showed red ink is spreading even to white picket suburbia. Tom Hanks, who once starred in an ode to such areas, couldn’t be reached for comment. Meanwhile his fellow multimillionaire community college graduate Arnold Schwarzenegger was unable to prevent the world’s eighth largest economy entering its 100th day without a budget. Freddie Mac announced average 30-year fixed mortgage rates dropped to 4.27% for the week ending Oct. 7, their lowest level since records began being kept in 1971. That was when Nixon took the buck off the gold standard, so the dollar and bullion hogged all the headlines back then -- the more things change. It was also the year a lad from Liverpool wrote a record. John Lennon would have been 70 tomorrow, the same date in 2007 that the Dow topped out at 14,164.
