Two Ways To Play: Soros Bets on Gold, Oil

Strengthen your portfolio in good times and bad.

What's Soros Betting On?

The 13F filings are out for George Soros' Soros Fund Management. According to Reuters, the billionaire more than doubled his bet on the gold ETF (GLD), taking his prior stake of 2.5 mln shares from the end of the third quarter to 6.2 mln shares. His other bets include a 7.7 mln share stake in Brazilian oil giant Petrobras (PBR) as well as an increased position in oil company Hess Corp (HES). Soros also started a $313 mln wager on Citigroup (C). Noteworthy is that he had no holdings of this bank at the end of the third quarter. Soros' filing probably isn't much of a surprise to Professor Lance Lewis. See his recent column from January, What Does George Soros Really Think of Gold?

From the Bull Pen: You can choose the GLD ETF as well, but the key point one should recognize is the inflation theme. Hard assets will continue to outperform. If there's another pullback in copper miner Freeport McMoRan (FCX); it could be a buying opportunity. Passive investors can start an initial position here with a sell stop below recent lows (near $65). Aggressive traders can consider the traditional 2% trailing sell stop.

From the Bear Cave: Bonds won't be favored in an inflationary environment. Consider the Ultrashort 20+ treasury ETF (TBT). A sell stop can be set near $46.50-47.
