At Buy and Hedge, we believe the growth of the exchange-traded fund (ETF) landscape is the single most important new product trend of the last decade. ETFs are products used by professional traders, mom & pop investors, and hedge funds alike – just to name a few. The ongoing introduction of new ETFs proves the point: The demand for these products is real and continues to grow!

At Buy and Hedge, we know that the market turmoil and volatility of 2008 and 2009 caught many investors off-guard: professional traders, mom & pop investors, and hedge funds – just to name a few. The key lesson from the market turmoil is clear to the authors: Investors need to proactively deploy risk management strategies in their portfolios. Whether you are an active trader or a long-term investor, you have to manage for risk in a proactive manner.

The intersection of this ETF product trend and this key lesson on risk management is the genesis of this new subscription content featured here on Minyanville in Buy and Hedge ETF Strategies. ETFs are a suitable and smart product for long-term investors, short-term traders, and everyone in between. ETFs will be the exclusive domain for this newsletter – along with executing risk management strategies in your investment strategies.

This newsletter will mix both strategic and tactical content. It will also include how-to explanations, market observations, commentary on new ETF issuances, and portfolio guidance in the form of target asset allocations for the hedged ETF investor.

We wrote a best-selling new investment book in 2011 titled Buy And Hedge: The Five Iron Rules for Investing Over the Long Term. For more than a decade, we were senior executives for TD Ameritrade during some of the industry's most transformative years. We want to share the lessons we have learned from the thousands of investors we have met.

Along with feature articles about the wider ETF landscape that we will publish, the content for the subscriber will be organized in to four sections or bylines:
  • Investing with ETFs
  • Trading with ETFs
  • Hedging with ETFs
  • Buy and Hedge Target Portfolios
Investing With ETFs
This section will focus on the strategies and tactics for the investor with a longer-term investment horizon. Expect regular articles on using ETFs to create long-term exposure to desired indexes. In addition, we will cover new product introduction in the ETF space that are targeted toward the long-term investor.

Trading With ETFs
If you describe yourself as a trader – as opposed to an investor – then this section is for you. The articles in this section will focus on popular trading techniques and how to use them within the ETF product world. Many new ETFs have been launched that focus on the short-term trader and we will write about these ETFs regularly.

Hedging With ETFs
Our book has five iron rules but the most important rule is this: Hedge Every Investment. We will teach the reader the specific tactics to use in order to hedge using ETFs. These tactics will always be taught in the context of an investment strategy. Our book is a nice compliment to this section – but you don't need to read the book to get value from this byline. You will learn to hedge just by following the articles in this section.

Buy and Hedge Target Portfolios
In our book, we provide a prescriptive approach to designing an asset allocation strategy for your portfolio. In this section, we will provide four portfolios – each with its own purpose. Three of the portfolios are designed to reflect your risk tolerance – using ETFs. The three risk tolerances we will define are Conservative, Moderate, and Aggressive. The fourth portfolio is a sector rotation strategy. Based on our research, we will construct a portfolio of all US Equity with broad exposure – but concentration in our preferred sector(s) using sector ETFs.

These portfolio designs will be updated at least quarterly. Performance reporting will be updated monthly for each portfolio. We will also add a running market commentary for each portfolio.

If you have any questions at any point, feel free to send them to and reference Buy and Hedge and it will get to us.
