Freshening up icons is one way companies stay current

Keeping brands fresh requires constant innovation. Last week, Wal-Mart (WMT) announced it would be changing its logo from the rigid, solid blue "Wal-Mart" with a star to the gentler, predominantly lower-case "Walmart" with a sunburst.

The new logo aims to highlight Wal-Mart's…er…Walmart's new found commitment to being more environmentally friendly. The chain recently announced an initiative to buy more locally grown food and dairy, as well as reducing the energy consumption of its truck fleet.

But plenty of other brands have undergone facelifts this year. In January, Xerox's (XRX) classic logo got transformed.

Meanwhile, in a continued effort to recapture its past mojo, Starbucks (SBUX) transformed its logo, as well.
