Sam's Club -- a subsidiary of Wal-Mart (WMT) -- recently came under fire for a rather unusual promotional campaign for its pharmacy: A Maryland branch handed out prescription bottles filled with candy to children -- presumably to introduce the world of pharmaceutical drugs to minors. The promotion was quickly killed and Sam's Club issued an apology, calling it an isolated incident.

However, this is scarcely the first time Wal-Mart has faced a public outcry.

Minyanville asks: What other Wal-Mart promotions have courted controversy?

Six Controversial Wal-Mart Promotions
If you are reading this article, you have got to question what you are reading!!!! People who bash WM will say anything. Most all a lie or distortion. The fact is that WM provides a low cost option for millions of customers and saves the average family hundreds or even thousands of dollars each year. As for the claim that they keep their employees in poverty and on public insurance, I have never had such good insurance and I have worked in many industries including aerospace. Check it out. . . asked someone who works for WM and compare their plan with others out there. WM provides a good salary which is generally higher than any other in the area where they are located for the same skill level. Do some research and you will find that WM's profit per empoyee is one of the lowest in the country. In other words, it puts its profits into its employees (associates) and back to the customer in the form of low prices. I encourage you to do some research and you will find that WM is a very good neighber in the communities that stores and DCs are located. Small businesses not only survive when WM come to town, but if they are willing to provide good customer service and other unique services they in fact thrive. Don't just read these lies from people who somehow get a big bullhorn and big anti-WM support from MSN and other media.

Wal-mart
I have worked for Wal-mart for almost 15 years and just want to clear up a few misunderstandings. 1. Wal-mart has insurance for its employees. It's their choice if they want to sign up for it. 2. I have never heard about these silly promotions that you speak about and I have worked in 2 states with Wal-mart. 3. Wal-mart will put a 95% recycle program in operation Nov. 1. As the largest employer in the world this is big. We are setting the example. 5. One Wal-mart I worked at was in a plaza with many other smaller businesses. Not one of those businesses went out of business. In fact they prospered. Wal-mart was a drawing card. Wal-mart cannot possibly carry everything people require. 4. No, we are not perfect. Any organization as large as Wal-mart will have problems but you must realize that Wal-mart is at the top and when you're at the top everyone wants to bring you down.
One of the problems I do see is too many stores are being built in close proximity to each other. With good prices people will drive for them. Plus competition builds between stores and that's not good. Then full time associates seem to be getting less hours especially in the lower volume Wal-marts. Yes, there are Wal-marts that don't do well. I now work in one, a low volume store. These are just a few problems I see. All in all I am glad that I have a job during these stressful times. Thank you for listening!

Wal Mart
The truth about Wal Mart is that it is bad for America. The bottom line is cheap goods require cheap labor which is why Wal Mart continues to contribute to American job losses and an ever increasing trade deficit with China (Wal Mart is single-handedly responsible for over 25% of the US trade deficit with China). In these difficult times, it's easy to see how people who don't know better make this easy choice but it actually costs us all in the long run.
