There may be more to the short sale ban than meets the eye. Sources are telling Toddo they're exploring the possibility of a coordinated effort from abroad.

Who was shorting the financials?
I was shorting the financials and I'm as American as baseball.

This sounds like an excuse for the knee-jerks to raise margin levels for traders. You know, do it in the name of patriotism.

Interesting
Maybe it was a coordinated effort to pick up assets on the cheap? If so, have they switched back to the long commodities play to drive the system under?

shorting?!!
Both GS and MS were beating the hell out of Lehman Bros, but once other shorters got wind of their problems, they cried foul. Paulson said stop from deep in the depths of GS's pocket.

shorting
good points and we all agree shorting is not necessarily the cause of stocks going down. Longs can just decide to sell too. But heavy selling in a fragile market and big down days don't help the public mood or economic prospects, and let's bear in mind that our pal Osama did say the US would be brought down by economics and from within. Granted, you're all probably correct to be skeptical as to the foreigners doin' it to us.... and that we don't need "help" from abroad to pull the debacle off.

Dangerous territory
Mr. Harrison:

You know I love Minyanville dearly, but I expect better from you, spreading rumors like this.

We are all under great strain as we watch our market implode, but this is absolutely not the time to repeat hearsay.

I forgive you for this mistake. Please do not make accusations of financial terrorism without providing any proof. If our market is to be truly free, even Osama Bin Laden should be allowed to short-sell.

Don't pile on Toddo. The next time you feel like piling on the shorts, vent some anger at whoever it is in your staff that only sent me 2 Minyanville shirts when I paid for 4. Thanks.
