Eight Great Moments in Pornographic Innovation

A collection of X-rated "a-ha!" moments.

If necessity is the mother of invention, libido is surely the naughty nurse of innovation.

Take a moment to marvel at the wizardry you now have at your fingertips: Streaming video, on-demand entertainment, a global community united through the Internet. The origin of these modern conveniences may have been some white-coated wretch sweating it out in a lab, we owe their widespread adoption to the hard-working men and women of porn.

From Blu-Ray (SNE) to Youtube (GOOG), the adult industry was among the first to take the "whiz-bang" and turn it into, well, whiz-bang -- if that's your thing.

Almost every useful technological innovation was immediately taken into the adult entertainment industry's well-oiled arms: Each was a new way to reach a wider -- and more uninhibited -- audience. Even movable type owed its rapid spread (if you'll pardon the expression) to the popularity of erotic literature, which -- despite being illegal in many cultures -- dates back back to the invention of the printing press itself.

While its basic formula has remained stagnant for some time (boy meets girls, girls meet girls, etc.), the industry is constantly pioneering new technological advancements. At this year's XBIZ conference, the adult industry's leading trade event, included the debut of the RealTouch -- an automated sex toy that allows users to "feel" the action taking place on their computer screens. Although some would describe it as somewhat crass  -- albeit a world-altering leap for ergonomics -- it could potentially be the latest in a long line of porn-based innovations.

We herewith present 9 examples of how, were it not for the itch, most inventions wouldn't make any scratch.
