Fatal Attraction in the Boardroom

The nine corporate love affairs we will never forget

"For Office Romance, the Secret's Out" ran a recent Wall Street Journal headline. The story was reporting on a recent survey that showed more employees feel it's unnecessary to hide a relationship between colleagues. About 67% of more than 5,000 employees interviewed by CareerBuilder said they see no need to keep office affairs undercover. That was up from 54% in 2005.

But there are limits to what our new more liberal office culture will tolerate. Bosses, especially married ones, are still expected to keep a distance from subordinates, as Walmart's former marketing executive was famously unable to do. Journalists can be fired for sleeping with their high-profile sources, as was the case with Suzy Wetlaufer, whose interview with Jack Welch led the pair into marriage. And using company airplanes and expense accounts is never a forgivable offense, whether your lover is a network superstar or a former male escort.

Here, just in time for Valentine's Day, we look back at the corporate affairs that have led to tabloid headlines, scandals, and high-profile resignations. Click on a portrait pairing below to get started.
