Apple's New iPod: Small Talk is Cheap

Brief scrutiny of today's headlines.

Apple (AAPL) announced a new iPod Shuffle, and may be developing a new netbook.

The iPod Shuffle offers 4 gigabytes, or capacity for about 1,000 songs, and is about the size of an AA battery. Users control the playlist from an earphone cord with a new VoiceOver feature that announces the songs.

The new device is priced at $79.

Apple appears ready to take delivery of a new 10-inch screen developed by a Taiwanese company. There’s no announcement from the company, but “people familiar with the matter” say it will be used in a netbook - a cheaper and smaller version of a notebook computer, the Wall Street Journal reports.

But others say the device will be used to develop a gadget similar to an iPod Touch. The larger screen would make it easier to play video games, watch movies, read e-books or surf the Internet.

If Apple is developing a new multimedia device, it’s apparently designed to go after Sony’s (SNE) PlayStation portable videogame player and Amazon.com’s (AMZN) e-book reader, Kindle.

In the past, Apple has announced new products each January at the Macworld show. But the company reduced its presence at the show, and co-founder Steve Jobs is taking time off for medical reasons. This creates a vacuum that’s been filled with speculation about Apple’s next product.

The company could release the next version of the iPhone this summer. Some speculate that it will be cheaper than current models.

No one outside the company knows for sure, but the warm-fuzzies are circulating and Apple’s stock is up in mid-morning trading.
