Things that make you go Hmmmmm

  • Today is my brother Tom's birthday and when I called to say Happy Birthday his receptionist said he was spending the day in the operating room. He is the best orthopedic surgeon in southern New Jersey (and the world) and that is no way to spend your birthday. He got the brains, skills and looks.

  • When I brought Brian Reynolds to Todd's office and he began speaking I felt like a 12-year old talking to a professor. He is that smart! I am sooooo proud that he would join me at Kirlin Securities and join us in Minyanville. Even though he is a rugby player, he is as nice as he is smart ;-). As you will see over time -- I ain't kiddin'.

  • When I was younger I always wanted to look smart. Now I want to act smart. As those close to me would tell you -- progress not perfection.

  • I have never seen my daily indicators this neutral and edgeless. The problem is that unless this is the "mother of all positive divergences," I find it hard to be unabashedly bullish with valuations not cheap, economic growth neutral at best, geo-political risks galore (outside of Iraq) and mutual funds at a very low level of cash as a percentage of assets. I also can't be unabashedly bearish because it was too easy to write the prior sentence, which means the negative reasons have been around too long.

  • Since I have been writing this, I have become totally bullish and bearish about 10 times. That means I should without question step back and take a chill.

  • According to Baseline, Inc. 31.4% of the S&P 500 is trading at under 12 times the forward four-quarter operating earnings estimates. While that sounds like a lot, 24.4% are trading at over 20 times the forward four-quarter operating earnings estimates. The S&P 500 currently trades at 16 times.

  • I graduated from LeMoyne College near Syracuse with a degree in political sience -- and for that I am proud. Did the Dolphins make the NCAA tourney?

  • Someone said to me the other week, "Dot be so humble, you are not that great." I will try to be "modest" -- much better word.

  • When you walk by an article of garbage on the street, do you think the person who threw it there was a pig and keep going, do you pick it up and throw it away or do you do both?

  • Obviously, I have very little market-elated info to offer.

  • Does today's action after a dismal economic number suggest that even a terrible earnings number may not be greeted with huge selling because the War in Iraq gave corporate America "get out of jail free" card?

  • My interview with WNN (Whacko News Network) got pre-empted by a breaking story. It got rescheduled for tomorrow morning.

  • This afternoon I am on Bloomberg Radio from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. EST. You can listen by going to and clicking on Radio tab.
