Off-Balance Sheet: Kodak's Sticky Past

How many people know that a Kodak scientist named Harry Coover invented Super Glue?

Relax, it's only money. Here in the 'Ville we like to keep things smart, but we also love to laugh. All work and no know how it goes. With that in mind we give you The "Off-Balance Sheet," a place where Minyans can experience humorous takes on the world of finance, personal stories from our Professors and Minyans and all the other stuff that makes life worth living. So take a break from the flickering ticks and dive in.

Everyone knows Kodak (EK) for photography-cameras, printers, film, and the like.

But how many people know that a Kodak scientist named Harry Coover invented Super Glue?

Super Glue

Coover came up with the formulation, known as cyanoacrylate, during World War II while searching for a way to make plastic gun-sight lenses. It was first brought to market in February 1955 as a product called "Flash Glue," was patented in 1956, and developed into Eastman 910 adhesive in 1958. The new glue was demonstrated in 1959 on the TV show "I've Got a Secret" when host Garry Moore was lifted into the air by two steel plates held together with a drop of Eastman 910.

Eastman 910 is still available, under the Super Glue brand-name, from the Super Glue Corporation of Rancho Cucamonga, California. I've often wondered if Super Glue is really as strong as everyone says. So, I picked up a tube at the hardware store and set out to conduct my own test.

I am doing this as I type, first opening the container, then carefully squeezing out a drop of glue-wow, this stuff comes out fast.
