The Bottom Line
The daily Minyanville take on news, commentary and opinion from around the world:
"Since last year's poverty rate of 12.7% was essentially equal to the 1968 rate of 12.8%, it seems that little progress has been made," writes Douglas Besharov in the Wall Street Journal. But, he notes, "by many other measures, poor people's physical and material well-being is considerably better now than in the late '60s. How else to explain why so many poor now have color TV (93%) and air conditioning (50%), and own their own homes (46%)?"
- Bottom Line: Just give me a color TV, some cool air conditioning and a tenement house to call my own and it's all good, baby!
- Corrollary: Won't someone please help those most in need - namely, those with tiny black & white TVs, no air conditioning and forced to rent a tenement house?
"The NASD and the New York Stock Exchange both recently proposed rules that would force firms to adopt business entertainment policies that cap amounts and specify appropriate venues. The move is expected to rule out company-paid or work-related strip club jaunts at the more than 5,000 brokerage firms in the USA," USA Today says.
- Bottom Line: Prediction for 2007: Lil Mynx debuts new office conference room stripper pole, enjoys hugely successful initial public offering.

Former Secreatary of State Madeleine Albright writes in today's Financial Times that that foreign policy of "Good vs. Evil does not work."
- Bottom Line: Of course we can't have a policy of Good vs. Evil. The categories below work better.
Bosnia (Republic of Srpska)
Papua New Guinea
the Marshall Islands
Countries Not Yet Bombed
