What Your Fast Food and Social Media Preferences Reveal About How You'll Vote


Political campaigns use such data to craft finely-honed messages aimed at getting a desired response.

MINYANVILLE ORIGINAL Are you a fan of Chick-fil-A? Then chances are you're a Mitt Romney supporter. Do you enjoy Ben & Jerry's (NYSE:UL) ice cream? If so, you're probably voting for President Obama.

Utilizing data from the thousands of people who use its Trendsetter app, which studies polling data and Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) 'likes,' digital agency Engage has teamed up with news site Buzzfeed to analyze user preferences for food, movies, books, and games, among others, and determine if there's any political correlations.

What they found was that those likely to vote for Romney favor restaurant chains such as Chick-fil-A, Outback Steakhouse (NASDAQ:BLMN), Cracker Barrel (NASDAQ:CBRL), and Waffle House, and brands like Dannon (PINK:DANOY), Florida's Natural, and Campbell's (NYSE:CPB). Obama supporters, meanwhile, enjoy frequenting Jamba Juice (NASDAQ:JMBA) and Chipotle (NYSE:CMG), and buying products from Red Bull, Ferrero Rocher, and Skittles.

There were, of course, many brands and restaurants that enjoy bipartisan support. Unsurprisingly, big names like KFC (NYSE:YUM), Wendy's (NYSE:WEN), McDonald's (NYSE:MCD), Dunkin' Donuts (NASDAQ:DNKN), Coca-Cola (NYSE:KO), and Pepsi (NYSE:PEP) were favored by both Obama and Romney partisans.

The aim of Engage's study was to demonstrate that "politics is often determined by the cultural choices we make daily."

"Whether you support Obama or Romney, that support is more often than not a manifestation of where you live, what you watch, and where you fit in culturally," Patrick Ruffini, president of Engage, told Buzzfeed.
