This upcoming week is the week that everyone has been waiting for -- excluding, of course, this past week. The Fed will release its monthly rate decision, with some sort of easing program or asset purchase program expected by the majority of Wall Street strategists. At the annual Jackson Hole meeting of central bankers, Ben Bernanke hinted that if economic conditions continued to deteriorate, the Fed could initiate additional asset purchases to boost economic growth.
Elsewhere in the US, advance retail sales and inflation data will be released on Friday and the US Treasury will auction off 3-, 10- and 30-year bonds. The bond auctions should be particularly interesting, especially the 30-year auction on Thursday, given that the Fed may discuss new bond purchases 30 minutes prior.
There isn't much in the way of interesting earnings reports this week, but recently IPO'd Palo Alto Networks (PANW) reports.
