During this holiday-shortened week, the S&P 500 (INDEXSP:.INX) rose to new record prices. The benchmark US index was up 1.2%, though some cracks have started to show under the surface as the 2014 approaches.

Next Wednesday, US markets and most global markets will be closed for New Year's Day. The majority of US economic data scheduled to be released will be related to December's manufacturing growth. On Tuesday morning, the Chicago regional purchasing managers index will be released. Economists expect that the index will remain near multiyear highs thanks to strong growth from auto manufacturers. The other manufacturing report of note will be the December national ISM survey which is scheduled to be released on Thursday. Economists expect the index will remain near its highest reading since early 2011. Lastly, December auto sales will be released on Friday afternoon.

Globally the calendar is light, as many Asian markets will remain closed throughout the coming week. The final estimate of eurozone manufacturing PMI is scheduled to be released next Thursday, in addition to the UK's manufacturing PMI.

There are no major earnings reports scheduled in the US for next week.
