In a victory for common sense, the trading behavior of company executives, directors, and large shareholders in the stocks of firms they're registered "insiders" at have been proven profitable to monitor by both academic studies and (more importantly) the experience of your fellow professional investors.

Below are lists of the top 10 mainly open-market insider purchases and sales filed at the Securities and Exchange Commission Tuesday, January 22, 2013 as ranked by dollar value.

Please note, however, that these are factual lists, not buy and sell recommendations. Dollar value is only one metric to assess the importance of an insider transaction, and, frankly, often not even the most important metric that determines if an insider transaction is significant.

In insider purchases, John Lipinski, President and CEO of CVR Refining (NYSE:CVRR), bought $5 million worth of company stock, while Executive Vice President of Crude Oil Acquisition and Petroleum Marketing Wyatt Jernigan bought $1,250,000. These follow Carl Icahn's recent purchase of $100 million worth of company stock. CVR had an IPO last week worth about $600 million. Perceptive Advisors, a beneficiary owner of biopharmaceutical company Aegerion Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:AEGR), bought $1,381,000 worth of company stock. Keith Stewart, CEO of ValueVision Media (NASDAQ:VVTV), bought $240,430 worth of company stock. The company is a direct-to-consumer retailer with television home shopping and Internet operations. John Varley, a Director of BlackRock (NYSE:BLK), the investment management fund and world's largest asset manager, bought $99,742 worth of company stock.

In sales, New York-based hedge fund Mason Capital, a beneficial owner of radio station operator Clear Channel Outdoor Holdings (NYSE:CCO), sold $6,741,000 worth of company stock. Addington Hills Ltd., a beneficial owner of Ixia (NASDAQ:XXIA), sold $2,003,310 worth of company stock. Ixia provides test systems and service verification platforms for wireless and wired services. The Virginia Retirement System, a beneficial owner of Blackrock Kelso Capital (NASDAQ:BKCC), sold $1,455,327 worth of company stock. Dawn Tabat, Chief Operating Officer of Generac Holdings (NYSE:GNRC), sold $726,000 worth of stock.

At InsiderInsights.com, we find new investment ideas just about every day using these and more intricate insider screens to determine where we should focus our subsequent fundamental and technical analysis. And while stocks don't (or shouldn't) move up or down based on insider activity alone, insiders tend to be good indicators of when real stock-moving events like earnings surprises, corporate actions, and new products may be in the offing.
