MINYANVILLE ORIGINAL The Dow Jones Industrial Average (INDEXDJX:.DJI) is up 124.37 points, or .93%, to 13,561.50 as of 2:47 p.m. EDT. The surge follows better-than-expected US manufacturing data. Manufacturing activity expanded after three months of contraction.

Hewlett-Packard (NYSE:HPQ) is up .24, or 1.41%, to $17.30, a rise in price that the tech company owes to the launch of its ElitePad 900.

American Express (NYSE:AXP) is up 1.12 points, or 1.97%, to $57.98 per share. This sharp increase in price follows its agreement to refund aggrieved customers $85 million in total.

Intel (NYSE:INTC) is up .26 points, or 1.17%, to $22.92. This relatively low upturn is surely not unrelated to Intel's Ultrabooks' poor sales.
