Economic Snapshot: What Are Madoff's Neighbors Saying?

Our unscientific poll.

To the surprise of many, the judge hearing Bernie Madoff's case placed him under house arrest -- rather than force him to stew in jail -- after the Ponzi schemer posted bail of $10 million.

Madoff will remain in his Upper East Side Manhattan penthouse until his indictment, which is expected to take place in March.

So, what's it like living under the same roof as the biggest fraud in history? Minyanville caught up with some of his neighbors to find out.

What Are Bernie Madoff’s Neighbors Saying?

Leslie Cuthbert, 10B: "Oh, Bernie's always finding time to visit. Every week, he'll ask me for a cup of sugar, a spare shredder or a urine sample."

James M. Vonfelden, 8A: "I swear, if I have to hear him watch Wall Street at top volume one more time, I'll take him out myself."

Mary Castor, 6B: "I have my doubts he's completely given up his pyramid schemes. I saw him the other day in the elevator with an Amway application."

Eric Williams, doorman: "If you looked closely, you could catch a glimpse of me in that Diane Sawyer expose piece last month. Can't complain."

Paul Cambra, delivery guy: "Instead of just tipping me, he always suggests I put $3 in one of his interest-bearing accounts. I never go for it."

Matt Lauer, Today Show host and neighbor: "Unfortunately, his failure to separate his recyclables is news to nobody but me."

Derek Waterson, mailman: "Other than an increased number of ticking packages, it's business as usual."

Madoff is just the fall guy. He is protecting others in on the scheme and he probably feels very gallant and selfless and persecuted. No way in hell one guy with a PC and copying machine runs a $50 BIL ponzi scheme. Big question now is, why is the go

I must be the only person on the planet who isn't really clear on what Madoff actually did. I mean, there is NO way he ran off with 50 BILLION DOLLARS! So did he just lose all that money in bad investments and try to cover it up? If s

Seriously???

Madoff lives in a 7 million dollar apartment. While that may seem ostentatious to you or me, for someone who stole 50 BILLION dollars, he was living like a pauper. All reports I've seen have reported that the

Ja, Shalom Dave. Money, stashed, hidden, funneled. In a sick way, setting up family and friends for retirement and more. There are armies of folks looking for the money. When they are done, will have a better idea.

Really, so Bernie
