Earlier this summer, Google
(NASDAQ:GOOG) had its name wrapped up with the $60 million Hollywood comedy The Internship
, wherein Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson took internships with the tech company. The result: a massive train wreck, with poor reviews and poorer ticket sales of $44,627,014.
Google's next product tie-in, perhaps an iota more subtle, is the newest version of Android, 4.4, which has been titled KitKat after Nestle's
(OTCMKTS:NSRGY) popular chocolate-covered wafer bar. The official announcement by Android can be found here
With updated versions traditionally named after generic deserts (1.5 was Cupcake, 2.3 was Gingerbread, and 4.0 was Ice Cream Sandwich), the new Android OS update marks the first time the company decided to go with an actual brand name. Moreover, Google has also just announced a Kit Kat-sponsored promotion: Consumers can win a brand-new Nexus 7 tablet or credit toward the Google Play app store by purchasing special Kit Kat bars with the Android image emblazoned on them. That's right -- Google is on candy bars now.
Android currently powers more than 1 billion smartphones and tablets worldwide and is the world's most used mobile operating system, with 37.93% of global market share as of June 2013, according to Web traffic analysis company StatCounter's annual Internet Wars Report
So what's next? Will Apple
(NASDAQ:AAPL), for the sake of competition, get hungry and grab a Snickers for its product tie-in? Or maybe it'll taste the rainbow and sign with Skittles, another Mars brand candy. Well, whatever -- it better not lay a finger on Butterfinger, which belongs to Nestle.
