Frighteningly Lame Halloween Costumes

How to lose friends and alienate people on October 31st.

Power Ranger

If you're a parent and your child says they want to be a Power Ranger for Halloween, it's time to have a chat: "I know you enjoy the brighty-colored adventures of those 5 upbeat teens, but the show is really played out. Here, have you seen Voltron?"

Viable Alternative: Transformer

The Joker

Heath Ledger's unsettling performance as Joker in The Dark Knight drew the final curtain on Jack Nicholson's 1989 interpretation - so much so that it will be too ubiquitous a costume to even consider.

Viable Alternative: Cillian Murphy's Scarecrow

Scream

The Scream outfit, also know as "I put absolutely no thought into this," has been in heavy Halloween rotation for over 12 years. But in 2008, the only thing it screams is a total lack of effort.

Viable Alternative: Darkman

Austin Powers / Dr. Evil / Shrek

What have ye wrought, Mike Meyers? Curiously high-grossing franchises featuring characters we never want to see or hear from again. Forutnately, his reign of terror seems to be on the wain. Chances are The Love Guru won't be well represented, if it's represented at all, but you never know, Wayne might make an appearance.

Viable Alternative: Phillip

The Mask

"Sssssmokin'!" Did you wince? "Somebody stop me!" How about now? If you haven't already sucker-punched your nearest co-worker, you must be made of stone.

Although it must be said: If somebody were to dress up as The Mask for the sole purpose of drawing the ire of fellow partygoers, we've found this generation's Andy Kaufman.

Viable Alternative: Fire Marshal Bill
