Public Displays of Confection

Candy hearts for the financially fit.

Nothing says I love you quite like a candy heart made of corn syrup, gelatin, xanthan gum and red 40. In a six-week runup to Valentine’s Day, Necco (short for New England Confectionery Company) sells roughly eight billion edible conversation pieces.

Some of us prefer the greens, others the whites (nobody really likes the licorice). But whatever flavor you fancy, it’s what’s written on the hearts that matters most.

Their language has changed dramatically since candy hearts began speaking around the time of the Civil War. In the good old days, they encouraged morality, as with the cautionary, “Married in Pink, He will take to drink.” Over a century later, Necco hearts have fully embraced the times, and woo customers with modern day whimsy like “Fax Me” and “IM Me.” This year’s theme -- a nod to meteorology -- features “In a Fog,” “Heat Wave” and “Chill Out.”

We’d like to take this opportunity to recommend 2009’s theme: hot for finance.
