Entrepreneurship: The New Lemonade Stand

A generation looks to themselves for the answer.

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how to develop my daughter’s entrepreneurial streak. On top of her Mother’s Helper business this summer, she’s itching to start an advice blog once final exams are wrapped up.

I’ve always been drawn to start-up companies or start-up ventures inside of established companies. The idea of building something from scratch is the ultimate career turn-on for me. So I’m loving this side of her.

My mother once gave me a copy of the poem, “Don’t Quit,”  and I want to instill that same value in my daughter.

Entrepreneurism really is the new lemonade stand. This was reinforced at a conference I spoke at in San Francisco this week about marketing to so-called Generation Y.

The big takeaway was that technology has given rise to a highly empowered and collaborative generation fearless about making their dreams happen – one that wants to build businesses that help change the world. Economy be damned. How cool is that?

Donna Fenn, who wrote the new book Upstarts: How GenY Entrepreneurs are Rocking the World of Business  says schools need to focus as much on fostering entrepreneurship as they do on test-taking. GenY expects to solve problems by starting businesses.

I got really jazzed watching the smart and funny author, entrepreneur and VC Guy Kawasaki moderate a panel on which the oldest of the five business founders was a mere 23.

There was teen-ager Ashley Qualls, whose WhateverLife website has drawn nearly 400,000 visitors a day.

UC Berkeley senior Jessica Mah will soon unveil indinero.com to help entrepreneurs manage their finances. Inspiration for the business came from her first venture, internshipIN.com, which floundered after its launch from lack of knowledge about profit-and-loss.

Then there’s another laudable accomplishment from Carly Wertheim, whose Teens Turning Green  landed a body product line in Whole Foods. And how did they do it? It was relatively easy, she said. The rep just loved the idea of a teen product for other teens.

Passion sells.
