Are You Either LinkedIn -- or Locked Out?

In a recession, mix business with your social-networking pleasure.

Though former Yahoo (YHOO) executive Jeff Weiner was recently ushered in as the company's new CEO, very little is expected to change. And LinkedIn's resolve to stick with what's been working is sure to be a hit with its supporters.

Fans of the site find it indispensable -- perhaps since it lacks any of the tastes-great-but-bad-for-you features of Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter. Jennifer Shotts at Examiner.com swears by it, claiming to regularly receive unsolicited notifications about full- and part-time jobs -- even when she isn't looking for one.

"If you are not on LinkedIn, then you do not exist in the professional world," she writes.

At Minyanville, some staff members find the site indispensable. In the sales department, Will Suarez and Alex Regenstreich often use the listings to get background information on clients as well as to post job openings. Suarez said the site "is very popular with interactive ad agency people," and appreciates the lack of "Facebook silliness" involved.

Minyanland's Laurie Petersen uses LinkedIn to set up business meetings in other cities, track associates' job changes, ask professional questions of the community, and follow who's been increasing their activity on the site, since she finds "it's sometimes a signal of something happening" at their organization.

But it was Minyanville President Kevin Wassong who gave the most glowing review of the company. "It's the ultimate people search -- better than Google (GOOG)."

Wassong, who didn't use the service until 2008, was swayed by new features and functions -- as well as LinkedIn's belief that numbers are ultimately better than revenue. Although he uses the free service, he admitted, "I would pay a nominal fee if they asked. It's become that useful."

Of course, your mileage may vary. Especially given the lack of quizzes.
