In 2005, UPS (UPS) was the recipient of an $18 million bill from New York City. For parking infractions. That's why the shipper's order of 200 hybrid electric and 300 compressed natural gas vehicles -- at an estimated cost of $15 million -- is raising eyebrows and questions of priority in environmental circles. It currently lags competitor FedEx (FDX), which was the first to invest in hybrid vehicles in 2003.
But it's a start.
According to Bizjournal.com, the hybrids are expected to save the shipper 176,000 gallons of fuel and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 1,786 metric tons -- the equivalent of taking 100 of its 100,000 conventional trucks off the road -- annually.
Imagine the reduction in size of UPS' carbon footprint if it could just outwit NYPD traffic cops.
