Trading Lessons: How to Use Technical Analysis

The sidelines exist in order to preserve capital.

Today, I find myself thinking the same as I review my existing positions and stops, and choose to be patient as we head into the weekend and a thin holiday week.

Here's a rundown of some positions I'm in that I'm watching closely going into next week:

Kohl's (KSS) -- Entering this short trade on Thursday, I suspected it would try to move higher than most expected it to, so I placed a stop quite above the bearish wedge range at $46.00. This stop remains in place, and I'll let this stock move accordingly.

Core Labs (CLB) -- Entering this short trade on Wednesday -- also with the intention of holding through any minor gyrations,  I have a hard stop at $88.80. The stock is below its trend line from December, and looks very vulnerable to further downside. We have to be aware that this pattern could fail and must respect the stop. If we start to see confirmation that patterns such as CLB start working to the downside, we can increase our exposure with confidence.

Westport Innovations (WPRT) -- I'm waiting patiently for an opportunity to add back shares to this winner. For the time being, the pattern after the recent run is still too young to determine a prudent entry. My stop here is not hard, and I'd only become concerned if the stock started heading back to my basis on the final 100 shares. I believe this stock can be a big winner and will wait patiently for an add point.

Rest up this weekend. Enjoy the time off, and I'll see you back here bright and early on Monday morning.

The most difficult lesson I relearn way too often is that sometimes it pays to just sit on the sidelines and not play ball.

To be honest, I can usually sense when this should be done but then I don't listen to my instincts and jump

"For the time being, the pattern after the recent run is still too young .."

..is another way to say "sometimes the sidelines is the right position".
