Slacker Index

Slacker stocks for a laid-back portfolio.

The Minyanville Slacker Index, or SLACK Index, is an equal-weighted index of eight slacker-related stocks. Although down a little more than 2% year-to-date, the SLACK Index has handily outperformed its benchmark index, the S&P 500, which is down a little more than 6%.

This relative outperformance typifies the slacker mentality of doing just enough to get by without actually showing a profit or breaking a sweat. Hey man, it could be worse.

Minyanville Slacker Index Component Breakdown

  • Anheuser Busch (BUD) produces half-bodied beers for the full-bodied slacker lifestyle. Not too expensive, not too cheap, not too delicious, not too anything, really. Just beer.

  • Cash America (CSH) is America's largest pawn shop and payday loan service operator. It's estimated that over the course of a decade the average slacker will have paid more than $8,700 for the same $250 guitar through pawn shop loans.

  • Electronic Arts (ERTS) develops, markets, publishes and distributes computer and video games.

  • Kelly Services (KELYA) is a temporary staffing specialist. "I'm only temping here while I save up money to open my own independent coffee shop," said Jim the Slacker.

  • La-Z-Boy (LZB). This company's too lazy to even spell out its own name. We like it.

  • MasterCard (MA). Available credit $7.45? Sweet. Give me a pack of American Spirit Lights, please, and put it on the card.

  • Netflix (NFLX) forever changed home theater. Why hustle to the DVD store when the DVDs can hustle to you?

  • Urban Outfitters (URBN) is widely reputed to be the premier source of slacker beanbag chairs and useless lifestyle paraphernalia.

A slacker co-worker who is a few years from retirement (and a kept man at home who will drink instant coffee if the wife isn't home to brew a pot) was singing the virtues of the stain removing pen.

I found him in the bathroom afte
