Have you ever heard the line, “It sound like somebody’s got a “case of the Monday’s”? It's from the movie “Office Space.” Folks, if you haven’t seen the movie, drop what you're doing right now and go rent it. It's really funny, and if you work in an office environment, you'll appreciate it all the more.
The Hang Seng closed down nearly 3% as we slept. The Nikkei was closed for a holiday. Meanwhile, European stocks were slightly in the red earlier this morning. Here in the US we're currently trading lower.
Here's what’s got my attention on what I might add, is a very cold morning, here in the northeast:
Harley Davidson (HOG):
I’m not too surprised because obviously I’m not expecting many people to drop $20K for one of their bikes these days. The news is a little disheartening given that it comes on the heels of another downgrade: Last week, Raymond James reportedly cut the stock to “Underperform” from “Market Perform.”
Clearly, I’m not a buyer here. However, this is a stock that I’m keeping on my radar screen. The insider data piques my interest a bit. Barry Allen, a director, bought 6,500 shares at $15.19. Call me crazy but I just don’t think he would've done that unless he ultimately thought he was going to put some jingle in the ol’ jeans.
Alcoa (AA):
In short, not exactly what AA shareholders wanted to see when they flicked on their screens on this fine Monday morning.
I realize that not all is hunky dory. That much is obvious from the job cut announcement made last week. I also suspect the shares are going to trade lower in today’s session.
With all that in mind, it seems that an awful lot of negative sentiment has been factored into the stock.
I have no idea what AA is going to say in its release, but I have a hunch that the shares may see a near-term bounce if there's even a smidge of optimism in the release. This is a reason I won’t be short the shares.
