On Tuesday, many media outlets -- including this one -- reported on rumors of a possible Twitter buyout by none other than Apple (AAPL). The price tag? A cool $700 million in cash.

The story spread virally, but was based on little more than hearsay. Can there be any doubt that the limited-character platform is the most talked about thing in business today?

Which got us thinking about all the other gossip this neverending generator of intrigue has produced. Herewith, the best of the unsubstantiated Twitter rumors.

The service is named after Reginald T. Twitter, who in 1842 began dictating his life's minutia in short letters to unwilling recipients.
 

 

General Motors CEO Fritz Henderson's obsession with the service caused the company to collapse.

 
Amazon is considering a buyout. But, in the interest of childhood literacy, will implement a 1400-word minimum.
 
Searching for the perfect conjoined company name, Twitter is seeking partnerships with Twix, Brita or Swiffer.
 

 

 

Twitter's actually not that big of a deal.
